Did you enjoy the horse race in the 2008 James Bond Quantum of Solace? This spectacular  scene is shot in Siena, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is called the Palio and it takes place twice a year in July and in August in this medieval setting.

Siena is about an hour away from Firenze on the Autostradale RA03 – Siena-Firenze.  There is also a bus that is actually faster than the train, that takes you from Firenze city center to the center of Siena. Siena is worth a day trip. As far as comparisons go,

It is often taught in Latin class that Rome was founded by Romulus, but a less taught fact is that Siena was named after Senius, Remus’ son. Who is Remus? Remus and his twin Romulus are rumored to be either Hercules’s or the god Mars’s sons : no one knows for sure, even their mother.  Their great-uncle attempted to murder the new borns by having them left for dead on the Tiber river but they were saved by a wolf and a woodpecker. Fast forward a few years, the twins killed their great-uncle, and it is believed that Romulus got Remus murdered. To get back to the original point, Siena is named after Remus’ son, and there are lots of Etruscan statues of the twins in the city.
